The bed redesign math: two seasons in, does it still look like install day?

Landscape design lives or dies on maintenance assumptions. Beds that stay on-plan use structure, not just color.

A bed designed well at install will look better in year three than year one — if the structure is right. Two seasons in is the honest test.

We build every bed around three layers: structural evergreens (boxwood, yew, holly), four-season interest plants (ornamental grass, hydrangea), and seasonal color slots filled on a rotation.

Why client beds drift off-design

  • No maintenance plan attached to the design
  • Color plants over-specified — they need annual replacement
  • Beds widened over time by mulch drift — edges lost
  • Pruning skipped during transition years

Harborfront installs include a maintenance plan by default. The cost of a monthly bed visit is less than replanting the same color-only bed every spring — and the property reads finished every week of the year.
